Obituary for Lori Lyn VanDeWege

Lori Lyn VanDeWege

Lori was born June 7, 1963 in Denver, CO and passed away after a battle with cancer on February 5, 2019 in Lacey, WA. She is survived by her two daughters, Allyson and Jennifer; four grandchildren, Jacob, Michael, Jessa, and Josie; her sister, Beth; two brothers, Brad and Jeremy; her parents; Kathleen and Harley; and numerous extended family members and friends.

Growing up Lori lived in the cities of Evergreen and Denver, Colorado and spoke fondly of the beautiful state and of her close family. Spending afternoons watching game shows on TV with her grandfather and riding bikes with friends were hallmarks of her early years. At 20 Lori married and became a mom to Jenny and Ally in the following years. After her divorce, Lori left behind everything she knew for a fresh start and moved to Washington in 1995. She was ever the determined and independent woman!

That determination served her well in her career. After completing her AA degree from South Puget Sound Community College, Lori started working for Thurston County Public Health and Social Services in the emergency preparedness and response field. Through the reputation earned by hard work and the networks she cultivated she transitioned to a job with the Washington State Department of Health. The relationships she made with colleagues at DOH brought her such joy and she was proud to work with them and for the agency. Ever the caretaker Lori valued mentoring others and advocating for women in the workforce and in a traditionally male dominated field.

Lori often said the only thing better than being a mom was being a grandmother. She adored her grandchildren. Sleepovers with Jacob and talking to Michael every day on his drive to daycare became treasured rituals. She taught both boys and Jessa how to give kisses and a love of books. Her youngest granddaughter was born just 36 hours after Lori’s death and while they didn’t meet in person the family knows that their souls met in that time and all four will have a special guardian angel watching out for them.

A memorial and celebration service for Lori will be held at 11:30 on Sunday, February 24 at the Lacey Community Center. Please join us at 6729 Pacific Ave SE, Olympia, WA 98503.

In lieu of flowers, Lori requested that donations be made to the American Cancer Society.

Arrangements by Edwards Memorial, Funerals Homes, Chapels and Crematories.
